Summary of Gonzales v. Raich

Facts: Controlled Substances Act prohibits the local cultivation of marijuana in order to combat the interstate traffic in illegal drugs.  

Issue: Does local prohibition of marijuana affect interstate commerce?

Holding: Yes.  Congress has a rational basis for believing that the local supply of marijuana has a substantial effect on the supply and demand in the national market.  The activities being regulated are economic in nature—production, distribution and consumption.  

Judgment: Constitutional.
